CFM Members Dominate at East Coast Music Awards

East Coast Music Week 2015 has come to a close, and we’re so proud of our members on the coast who were among the nominees and winners at the awards gala. Musicians from many locals took home well-deserved awards, but the maritime locals were naturally most strongly represented.

Local 571 (Atlantic Federation of Musicians) has a lot to brag about, as many talented members took home awards:  In-Flight Safety (Album of the Year), Charlie A’Court (Blues Recording of the Year), Derek Charke (Classical Composition of the Year and Classical Recording of the Year), Jimmy Rankin (Country Recording of the Year), Joshua Van Tassel (Electronic Recording of the Year), Chelsea Amber (Gospel Recording of the Year and R&B/Soul Recording of the Year), The Town Heroes (Group Recording of the Year, Fans’ Choice Entertainer of the Year, and Fans’ Choice Video of the Year),  Mo Kenney (Pop Recording of the Year), Joel Plaskett (Producer of the Year), Ten Strings and a Goatskin (World Recording of the Year), and Darren McMullen of Còig (Roots/Traditional Group Recording of the Year).

Local 820 (Newfoundland and Labrador Musicians’ Association) also has reason to be proud; St. John’s indie rock group Hey Rosetta! took home two awards (Song of the Year and Songwriter of the Year), The Once snagged Folk Recording of the Year, and Rob Power won Classical Composition of the Year (along with Local 571 member Derek Charke).

Other winners hailed from Local 355 (Cape Breton Professional Musicians’ Association), including Còig (Roots/Traditional Group Recording of the Year) and Wendy MacIsaac (Traditional Instrumental Recording of the Year).

The New Brunswick Musicians’ Association (Local 815) was proudly represented by winners Les Hay Babies, who took home the award for Francophone Recording of the Year.

Other locals supplied winners as well: Local 149 (Toronto Musicians’ Association) member Kirk MacDonald won the Jazz Recording of the Year award, Local 180 (Musicians’ Association of Ottawa-Gatineau) member Jacques Doucet’s group Radio Radio won Rap/Hip-Hop Recording of the Year, Local 298 (Niagara Region Musicians’ Association) group The Trews took home Rock Recording of the Year, and Local 1000 (Nongeographic) member Kim Harris won Rising Star Recording of the Year.

Many other AFM members were recognized with nominations, and we couldn’t be prouder of all of them. We’re never surprised when our members’ talent is recognized, but we are delighted!
